Mark graduated from Loughborough University in 1982 and qualified as a CIPFA accountant in 1987. He has worked at the Audit Commission, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (as Head of Audit), the Western Isles Council (as Deputy Director) and at Oxford City Council as its Director of Finance and Corporate Services. Mark is currently Finance Programme Director at the Local Government Association.
Mark was part of the group that worked to establish the Credit Union and has been on its board since the credit union's creation in 2005.
Mark ensures the board focuses on key issues and that all board members have a real say in how their credit union is run.
Mark explains:
"I'm passionate about the Oxford Credit union because it's a practical way of putting all Oxford residents in control of their own money. Instead of borrowing at unfairly high interest rates, individuals can both save and borrow at fair rates.
Our credit union is local. Money saved stays within the community and the board is made up of people who have funds in the credit union. This is a real example of grassroots democracy."
Mark also chairs the Westmill Windfarm in Oxfordshire and is a non-Executive Director of South Oxford Housing Association. He is a member of the Centre for Alternative Technology, Midcounties Cooperative and the Climate Outreach Information Network.
